The tragic accidents that took place on Moggill Road in Kenmore and Chapel Hill have urged cycling groups such as Bicycle Queensland and Brisbane West Bicycle User Group in collaboration with the Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to conduct a study to explore the best options to make the road safer to cyclists.

Chris Cox, co-convenor of Brisbane West Bicycle User Group (WestBUG) created a petition to improve the safety of cyclists on the road, which was supported by Dr Christian Rowan MP. The petition has garnered a total of 401 signatures, which closed in May of this year.

The petition requests the House to urge the Queensland Government to add safety upgrades on the road:

  • A direct link between the Cubberla Creek Bikeway and Akuna Street Bikeway on either side of Moggill Road, Chapel Hill
  • Ramp access to the Moggill Road service road after Boblynne Street, rejoining at the Chapel Hill Road intersection
  • Safe, separated cycling infrastructure on Moggill Road in line with its designation as a Principal Route in the South East Queensland Principal Cycle Network Plan

At present, the study is still ongoing whilst cyclists all over west Brisbane wait with bated breath, fingers crossed that their requests will be granted by the Government and ensure safer cycling not only on this particular road, but also throughout the national network of roads.
